Hypercubus

Hypercubus

Instrumentation – steel-string guitar

Duration – c.4’33”

Written in Brighton 2004

First performed by Lee Westwood, time and place unknown

I had recently read a book by Michio Kaku (the title of which I forget), and was particularly struck by a painting at the back of the book by Salvador Dali entitled ‘Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus)’, which depicted Jesus being crucified on an unfolded hypercube. The painting (and the book) suggested that God existed in a number of (spatial?) dimensions in addition to the three that we percieve. This guitar piece, which is written with a very specific, yet apparently free-flowing sense of meter, was a kind of abstract meditation on this notion.
