One For The Road
Instrumentation – flute & steel-string guitar
Duration – c.4′
Written in Brighton 2005
First performed by Lee Westwood (guitar) and Philippe Barnes (flute) downstairs at The Globe Pub, Brighton, 2006
Dedicated to Sylvia Maria Saunders. At the time my two closest friends were leaving Brighton (Gerard Mapstone back to Australia, Sylvia Maria Saunders to Seville), and being the one left in Brighton, I was struck by a terrible feeling of the end of an era. This piece was written to reflect that feeling. The main melody was composed whilst walking around my home town. Originally for solo guitar, and later arranged for flute and guitar, with a section for an improvised flute solo.
